Creating Art Work with Computer Programs (WeisseEdelweiss)

edited December 2006 in Artist Alley
A lot of people ask me what type(s) of program(s) I use to create my art work and/or what tools I use. They wish to know what the best art/photo editing program is available.

I use Photoshop CS2. It's on the expensive end but it's worth it. I bought mine (a deal) for 300 dollars. It usually sold for 500-700 dollars. I don't know what its current price state is at. I'm assuming because it is the latest version of Photoshop that it is still fairly expensive.
In my opinion it is the best program out there. So far I haven't found anything better.

Other Programs I use: Image Ready CS2. This program is a lesser form of Photoshop CS2. I like to use this for animations.

Programs I've used in the past: MS Paint, Microsoft Word (sad but true), Corel Art, Flash (briefly).

Paint:(MS Paint) This is a very basic program. All your computers should have MS Paint. It's not a choice to use for detail, however I've created very nice and clean line arts using this program in the past and still to this day (not so much anymore though). If you give it a chance it should work well for you.

A few tips on using MS Paint: Try to keep the lines clean. If a pixel is sticking out somewhere that shouldn't, fix it with one click.
You can shade with Paint! Just use a darker color of what you want shaded by using the Eye Dropper tool and choose "Edit Colors..." from the Colors tool box. Next choose Define Custom Colors. You should get every Visible Light color under the sun.
Paint is what you make of it. I've created simple nice images with it. Remember that just because it isn't created with an expensive program that it isn't any good. It may be you needing practice.

Corel Art: Corel Art has WONDERFUL brushes. They rival Photoshop’s; however it doesn't change the fact that free hand and Corel do not mix. I've used the latest version and it didn't turn out right. Editing was more time consuming than usual. I've found that Corel Art behaves very well when creating geometric shapes and such. I wouldn't bother with it (unless you want to make nice backgrounds for layouts, but Photoshop can make equally as nice if not better ones).

Microsoft Word: This is shameful, but back in the day I used Paint and MS Word together. I created a few interesting things. Microsoft word can resize your image without making it look pixilated. Don't bother resizing in Paint. It makes the image look choppy.
This program also has template word art styles.

Photoshop: Photoshop seems to be the best thing out there. You can use filters (Corel has something similar to this. I can't remember what they are called but they try to mimic Photoshop's) to create texture or color affects such as wind. Photoshop creates clean line art and blends colors very well. It comes with an array of brushes and much more!

Non-Program Tools: Computer Tablet

A computer tablet is a flat electronic device (mine is 9x12) that functions as a paper and pen only it shows up on your computer. The tip of your pen is like a mouse and the tablet is a sensor. When you draw or color it shows up on your screen. It makes life a lot easier (but it's not cheap). It hooks up into your computer via USB port.

<a href="http://www.stormcomputers.com.au/catalog/images/AIPTEK-GTAI12K.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.stormcomputers.com.au/catalo ... It may help answer someone's question.

 • Okay, so I have both Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Imageready CS2, full versions, not the demos, but I can't draw very well with it...

 • To create decent picture, I'd recommend 600x800 pixels using a size 3 (hard) brush.

If you can't draw well with it after that you may want to consider getting a tablet or perhaps you merely need to practice. Hope this helps! ^^

 • Opencanvas (OC) is a good tool but takes awhile to get used to. Especially on the free version and how they only have water coloring. :x

I suggest you don't get any full version of photoshop unless you are absolutely sure that you know how to use it and are comfortable with it. It is a high end art program and costs $649
