So here’s a brief outline of the different types of art, and how you identify them. Most of the confusion lies with in the digital art, so I have tried to emphasis on that and have provided examples (the two indicated with a * are off deviantart.com). Click on the thumbnails to enlarge them. <br><br><span style="color:red">Digital art</span><br><span style="font-weight:bold">(Handdrawn)</span><br><span style="text-decoration:underline">Overview:</span> Hand drawn digital is created on programs such as Paint, Photoshop and GIMP. It involves creating a line art which can be left plain or can be coloured from scratch. Digital art can either be realism, cartoon, stylized or something in between them all. Realism is often faked by manipulating photos; this is not on and be expecting to be found out by people, even if you make phony work in progress shots (they are explained below). <br><span style="font-style:italic">-Uncoloured line art</span><br>Line arts can either be just the plain line art or a coloured line art. Line arts are just the lines of the basic shapes on the horse. More detail can be added however most line arts are left pretty basic. Line arts can be done by drawing on paper and then scanning them onto the computer or they can be done by a tablet. Line arts done with tablets are referred to as ‘inked’ as they have a smooth, inked look. Line arts that have been scanned in can b inked by tablets to improve their look. Inked line art example:<br><a href="http://i31.tinypic.com/205xilw.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://s3.tinypic.com/205xilw_th.jpg" alt="http://s3.tinypic.com/205xilw_th.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br><span style="font-style:italic">-Coloured line art</span><br>Coloured line art is simply a line art that has colour with it. The colour can either be behind the line art, allowing the lines of the line art to show through or it can be placed over the top so that the line art cannot be seen. However the colouring is restricted to the boundary of the line art so that the original shape of the line art is distinguished. Colouring can be in many different forms such as plain flat colours, normal shading, pixel colouring, cell shading or details shading (usually used in realism). Here are a few examples to help you identify each:<br>Flat colouring (no shading) <br><a href="http://i30.tinypic.com/20gxzqd.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://s3.tinypic.com/20gxzqd_th.jpg" alt="http://s3.tinypic.com/20gxzqd_th.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>Normal shading<br><a href="http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs27/i/2008/076/6/4/Madame_Butterfly_by_boribaby.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-5.pv.deviantart.com/fs27/150/i/2008/076/6/4/Madame_Butterfly_by_boribaby.jpg" alt="http://tn1-5.pv.deviantart.com/fs27/150/i/2008/076/6/4/Madame_Butterfly_by_boribaby.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>Pixel colouring<br><a href="http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c77/horsegirljess/th_pixelpony2.gif" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c77/horsegirljess/pixelpony2.gif" alt="http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c77/horsegirljess/pixelpony2.gif" class="bb-image" /></a><br>Cell shading<br><a href="http://tn3-2.deviantart.com/fs21/300W/i/2007/277/8/a/Horseman__cell_shading_by_White_Jackal.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-1.pv.deviantart.com/fs21/150/i/2007/277/8/a/Horseman__cell_shading_by_White_Jackal.jpg" alt="http://tn1-1.pv.deviantart.com/fs21/150/i/2007/277/8/a/Horseman__cell_shading_by_White_Jackal.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>Detailed shading (realism)<br><a href="http://tn3-1.deviantart.com/fs30/300W/f/2008/071/2/c/Passing_Anger_by_horsegirljess.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-4.pv.deviantart.com/fs30/150/f/2008/071/2/c/Passing_Anger_by_horsegirljess.jpg" alt="http://tn1-4.pv.deviantart.com/fs30/150/f/2008/071/2/c/Passing_Anger_by_horsegirljess.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>Please also note that some people create ‘paint overs’, this is taking another picture and creating a layer on top of it. They then use the eye drop tool to pick out the colours and with the brush tool, paint the colours over. This is pretty much just tracing but is still a form of hand colouring/hand painting. Don’t confuse hand painting with hand drawing it is not the same thing even if they create a new line art and find similar photos to the line art in which they can paint over. Some times different photos are used to mix and match to the line art. The colours of the original picture can also be changed so that the final coloured piece does not look exactly like the photo. Some people view this type of colouring as cheating (or pretty much no different to smudging) however it is not as long as people are told that this is what was done and are no led to believe that it is proper hand drawing and colouring. If you have an issue with the piece you are viewing, simply ask the creater if it was done like this.<br><br><span style="font-weight:bold">(photo manipulation)</span><br><span style="text-decoration:underline">Overview: </span>Photo manipulations are common when making banners, pictures for horses or layouts. Photo manipulations are generally digital however traditional work can be incorporated into the product. They are made by taking a photo and manipulating it on photo editing programs. This is ok to do as long as the photos are owned by you or come from stock sites. Quite often people take photos from google, this can be illegal. Most photos occurring in google searches are covered by copy right laws and cannot be used with out the permission of the owner. If you have asked permission, be prepared to show people their written consent. If someone points out that you have used a copyrighted image, it easier to admit your fault and discard the image. There is no harm in not knowing, but there is harm in lying. Here is a general photomanipulation made by dpj. <br><a href="http://s.deviantart.com/styles/blank.png" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-4.pv.deviantart.com/fs26/150/f/2008/098/e/e/I_Can_Love_You_Like_That_by_ponypal91.png" alt="http://tn1-4.pv.deviantart.com/fs26/150/f/2008/098/e/e/I_Can_Love_You_Like_That_by_ponypal91.png" class="bb-image" /></a><br>She has cut out the window panes, layered in the sky, adjusted the colour of the window, added models, adjusted the colours, added rays, and brushes along with moon stock. <br><span style="font-weight:bold">-Smudge</span><br>This is the most commonly made piece of art that people try to pass off as hand drawn digital art. And it’s also the most commonly picked up misguidance! To be on the safe side, you should clearly state that your work is smudged (if it is), whether you are showing it off or selling it. Smudge art is done by taking a photo and using a smudge tool or blur tool to smooth the image, giving it a hand drawn look. Here’s an example of a smudged piece:<br>(The one on the left is the original; the one on the right is smudged and has a background change)<br><a href="http://i27.tinypic.com/2wfl994.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://s3.tinypic.com/2wfl994_th.jpg" alt="http://s3.tinypic.com/2wfl994_th.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br><span style="font-weight:bold">(Banners)</span><br>Most banners are made from cutting out different pictures and putting them together to make a collage. Text, effects and brushes are often used too. A cut down picture with some text slapped on isn’t generally counted as a banner, if you make it and use it for your own personal use then you might get away with it but if you try to sell it then people will probably claim that you have only added text and therefore are profiting from the work of the photographer that took the photo. Some banners are one photo that’s had its colouring altered, maybe an effect over the top and some text. You can however use digitally coloured images or traditional pictures on the banners. But just remember that anything you use must not be covered by someone else’s copy right, if you get the images from google then chances are someone else has seen them and will pick you up on it. The top would not be an acceptable banner while the bottom would. This is not what you are looking for:<br><a href="http://s3.tinypic.com/4kjhb9_th.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://s3.tinypic.com/4kjhb9_th.jpg" alt="http://s3.tinypic.com/4kjhb9_th.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>While something like this is more appropriate in terms of changes to the original picture:<br><a href="http://i26.tinypic.com/1zwemat.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://s3.tinypic.com/1zwemat_th.jpg" alt="http://s3.tinypic.com/1zwemat_th.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>The same principles apply to manip pictures for horses or layouts.<br><br><span style="color:red">Traditional</span><br><span style="text-decoration:underline">Overview:</span> Traditional art is done with traditional mediums such as pencils, charcoal, paint, pens or molding products. It can include things such as drawings, paintings, sculpture and collages. When scanning these onto the computer, some people find it acceptable to apply minimal digital enhancement however you may want to make this clear to people especially if you are planning on selling the original as it will not appear the same on the screen as it does in real life. <br>Graphite <br><a href="http://fc04.deviantart.com/fs24/i/2008/028/8/7/Storm_by_horsegirljess.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-2.pv.deviantart.com/fs24/150/i/2008/028/8/7/Storm_by_horsegirljess.jpg" alt="http://tn1-2.pv.deviantart.com/fs24/150/i/2008/028/8/7/Storm_by_horsegirljess.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>Pen <br><a href="http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs28/f/2008/070/d/7/Knight_horse_by_horsegirljess.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-4.pv.deviantart.com/fs28/150/f/2008/070/d/7/Knight_horse_by_horsegirljess.jpg" alt="http://tn1-4.pv.deviantart.com/fs28/150/f/2008/070/d/7/Knight_horse_by_horsegirljess.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>*Coloured pencil<br><a href="http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs18/f/2007/190/d/5/Sleeping_Sun_by_Embers.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-2.pv.deviantart.com/fs18/150/f/2007/190/d/5/Sleeping_Sun_by_Embers.jpg" alt="http://tn1-2.pv.deviantart.com/fs18/150/f/2007/190/d/5/Sleeping_Sun_by_Embers.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>*Painting <br><a href="http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs7/i/2005/209/d/4/Horse_by_asemo.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-5.pv.deviantart.com/150/fs7.deviantart.com/i/2005/209/d/4/Horse_by_asemo.jpg" alt="http://tn1-5.pv.deviantart.com/150/fs7.deviantart.com/i/2005/209/d/4/Horse_by_asemo.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>*Charcoal<br><a href="http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs21/f/2007/308/7/4/Charcoal_Pony_by_Embers.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-1.pv.deviantart.com/fs21/150/f/2007/308/7/4/Charcoal_Pony_by_Embers.jpg" alt="http://tn1-1.pv.deviantart.com/fs21/150/f/2007/308/7/4/Charcoal_Pony_by_Embers.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>*Pastel<br><a href="http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs13/i/2007/068/c/3/Darn_It__s_a_horse_FINISHED_by_dbjs.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://tn1-5.pv.deviantart.com/fs13/150/i/2007/068/c/3/Darn_It__s_a_horse_FINISHED_by_dbjs.jpg" alt="http://tn1-5.pv.deviantart.com/fs13/150/i/2007/068/c/3/Darn_It__s_a_horse_FINISHED_by_dbjs.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br><br><span style="color:red">Photography</span><br>Overview: Photography can be categorised as either digital or traditional. It is strongly advised that if you are not a well known artist or have significantly improved, that you take several WIP shots during the creation of your image. This just helps to prove what you have done. It is also obvious when someone has created a fake WIP; it seems to be more of a ‘guilty until proven innocent’ mentality for the judgments on this game in regards to art. By misleading people you could get your self an undesired reputation. Click on the following to see a miss leading WIP.<br><a href="http://i31.tinypic.com/andjko.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://s3.tinypic.com/andjko_th.jpg" alt="http://s3.tinypic.com/andjko_th.jpg" class="bb-image" /></a><br>If you are going to take WIP shots you should take many that easily show how the picture was coloured. If there is any doubt in your work, show your WIP and your reference. Some times giving a layer break down will help too. It must be understood that not everyone takes WIP shots, if the need should arise that WIP shots should be taken, then simply make a new piece of art and take lots of WIPs.<br>With a good collection of WIP shots, you should be able to create a walk through or a tutorial. No, this does not mean you have to, it’s just a way of being able to judge if the WIP shots show enough detail of how the image was created. WIPs are also helpful to prove that the image was created by you, in case of any accusations that the work was stolen.
