Okay so, right now at my school we're doing physical fitness testing.
Now, we're only supposed to do it freshman year and it's over with, but
we're testing again because apparently there were a lot of kids last year
who didn't pass.

There's 6 tests, and to pass you need to pass 5 of those 6.
If we don't pass 5/6, we have to take P.E for another 2 years.

Now, one of those tests, this year, is height and weight.
O.o
I dunno about anyone else, but I think it seems a little like discrimination
to test people on their height and weight, specifically their weight.
First of all, our teacher didn't even tell us what weight we're "supposed" to be
at.
Second of all, your really not supposed to be a certain weight at a certain
age. It all depends on your diet, exercise habits, and your height.
So how are they going to go and -test- us on our weight?!?!

I have to say, I'm rather skinny myself. But, I do have numerous friends
who are clearly overweight, and they're taking it very hard.
I think this "weight testing" is humiliating, degrading and I feel it's discrimination.
It makes me mad that our school district is actually doing this. I can
understand that they want everyone to be a healthy weight, and fit, and
that they're worried because this is the most unfit generation in history,
but seriously...

What do you all think? Am I just over-reacting? Or is this a serious matter?

  • I say that the weight thing and if your "over" weight you need to take more gym is a screwed up system, and if it was me or my kids I'd be going to court... Im serious its humilating.. Id be taking more gym, and yah.

Yes it is humiliating.
When I told my mom about the whole weight test thing, she said she
might make a complaint to the district.
I don't think it's fair.
  • I dont think it's wrong that they're testing you on it because certain body developments should mature and grow properly (I do not however think the height should be included, the weight yes, because if one is overweight, i think gym should be required as to imporving your health, but height? How would gym class help improve your height?) I Do not Think it is right that they didnt warn you about the Height & Weight testing earlier on though... just my thoughts

See thats where I couldn't make up my mind about this.
I mean, taking a class to help you lose weight, if you are overweight, definitely makes sense.
It's just the fact that they're -grading- based on your weight, make is seem..
wrong, somehow.

Thanks for your input ;)
  • I would be one of those people that would have to take gym again. That would be humiliating to me. That might make them develope eating disorders. Having to be humiliated like that would make them eat more if they were an emotional eater. It isn't easy for some to lose weight and it woulc take months. They shouldn't HAVE to take a class because of height and weight. Height is just ridiculous. You can't change your height. THat is really stupid. This is even making me mad. I wouldn't listen to what they were telling me if I went to that school and I am not the rebellious type. You can't force someone to change their appearance. They can only get healthy if they want to. Having gym won't make them magically thin or in the right weight range.

  • This is extremely humiliating for all of the born-overweight and overweight people! I'm perfect on my weight, it's all muscle. xD Definately disccrimination! I'd get very highly offended and would take action if it were my child that failed the WEIGHT test. >.>

  • I HATE when people think they can judge on weight.
BMI indexes are mostly a lie. you cannot look on a scale and see your bone structure, muscle weighs more than fat. Therefore a muscular person is concidered "FAT" by these standards. Body fat percentages need to be gauged as well.
There is NO reason to have a Weight test in a school. period.

  • A healthy weight isn't when you are even skinny.. dang this is ... ;-; just.. bad!
I also have friends that are overweight and it isn't their fault and they are still healthy!
You can be underweight and what would they do, make you gain weight?
I am way underweight too but my best friend is kinda.. ;-; I don wanna be rude.
But seriously, if they are making Overweight people loose weight, are they going to make underweight people gain weight? If people start that, then I would be mad. But reading this makes me furious! Ugh
i know you're supposed to cherish life , but this crap isn't paradise .

  • I am not a fan of PE. I am horrible at it...

1) I don't agree with any kind of school physical tests GRADING you on your ability unless it has something to do with your career path. Sure, testing you to see what you ARE capable of is okay. But to be able to fail is absolutely ridiculous!

2) I am completely underweight by about... I'd say, 30-50 pounds. I don't have any muscle or meat xD I'm just... like that. My dad was like that, his family was like that. I'm like that! Same with anyone who is overweight. And I know it's a huge problem now and very life-threatening... but you shouldn't be able to fail a friggin' weight/height test.

they tell us not to judge each other and they're just making matters MUCH worse.

It drives me insane. I would definitely make a complaint..

And I am the rebellion type.
  • At last! I'm not the only underweight person here! :/ Sorry. People were always accusing me of not eating and such, I'm getting myself a one-way ticket to anorexia, etc. It's just disgusting that if you're underweight you're pathetic and if you classify as overweight you're not trying. Some people are just built like that. Heck, I'm 5'8 and weight just over 100 pounds. But I eat 24/7. I don't care what you feed me, greasy french fries or a fruit salad(I'm very partial to both. 8D) I'll eat it. And all I get for it is comments to eat more and get meat on my bones. It's disgusting, the society today.

Half the people that are accused of being over weight aren't. They're simply on the higher scale of being healthy. My mother has been exercising for weeks, eating healthier, etc. to get healthier since my family is prone to diabetes, it seems. Yet even though she's put well over 24 hours of exercise this week she hasn't lost a pound. Some people are just built like that.

Instead of grading people on things they quite possibly can't change, they should encourage eating better, showing them some good exercises to do to remain healthy and quite possibly loose weight and get fit. Grading people on these things is touchy and humiliating to those of both healthy weight and slightly unhealthy, whether on the lower or higher end of the weight scale. It's disgusting. You have every right to be mad.
