Greyhounds

Ok my neighbor has 2 retired racing greyhounds. A male named Jelly and a female named Drink. I love them both. Last year I was allowed to let them out in the yard to play for a little bit while they were still getting used to their new surroundings. I wasn't allowed to walk them cause they would still chase anything that was furry and moved. I took them out one at a time tonight for a walk. I have certainly gotten my exercise. lol

Jelly has been off the track for a longer time than Drink so he won't run unless he absolutely has too. Other than that he prefers a nice gentle walk. Drink will run with me. I am allowed to go over whenever I want to and take them for a walk now. I am so happy and excited. lol I also am hot sticky and sweaty right now. Anyone else own retired racing greyhounds? I'm thinking about maybe getting one when I move out of the house instead of getting a husky. Let me know what y'all think.

Well I suppose racing greyhounds would be more work than a Husky since they probably need a bit more exercise. [: I have a Siberian Husky who needs to be walked -at least- 30 minutes a day to not go crazy and kill our grass. xD [Long story. >_>] But, Huskies are great pets, too! 8D I love my Husky, she's so sweet, but she jumps on people when she meets them. xD A little obedience training and voila, perfect Husky. xD

i think adopting a retired greyhound would be awesome! although, i probably wouldn't, i like pocket sized dogs or bigger dogs like labs. XD but, i remeber going to an art festival and they had an adoption thing going on for greyhounds. i got mauled by one, it kept stepping on my feet, it was so cute. >:)

My dad's coworker owns a few. c: He loves them, but they are a handful involving exercise. But if you can put in the work, and have the room for one, I think it'd be wonderful to take one in.

my friend owns one.. hes young but got althritis.. greyhounds dont really take alot of exercise though.. its a commonly unknown fact

Agreed with the person above me, except I would think its an uncommonly known fact except with people that have had Greyhounds a lot. They don't need as much exercise as you think. It might take some work getting the Greyhound used to being in a home environment since it probably has been stuck in a kennel all day for quite some time. I think rescuing a Greyhound would be "greyt" though. They are apparently sweet as sugar and can definitely be taught to heel (I imagine they wouldn't know how) with pinch collars and the like.

-Bluey- They actually aren't that much work after you get them used to their new home. Usually they are used to spending all day in a kennel with one other dog so you become their 'kennel mate'. After they get used to you and being allowed to roam about a bit more than they could in a kennel they are great to have around. I also love huskies. I am just seriously thinking about maybe getting a greyhound too. I adore my neighbors and I would probably end up becoming a second owner to them if my parents would let me spend the time I would like to over there. My uncle has a few huskies and they do take a lot of exercise and I know what you mean about the grass. He has one who will pick a different spot of grass each time he doesn't get enough exercise and just dig till he ruins that spot. -Panda- Haha yes they do tend to stay close to your feet. Drink is still very skittish and doesn't trust people or other animals very well. She has sorta gotten used to me though so she will let me walk her now. Their tails are another thing to watch out for. They sting worse than anything if they really get going. -Dreamy- Thanks. Yes they can be a handful but more often than not they aren't. Once they get used to not being on the track then they are like any normal dog. They CAN get really lazy and won't run. lol. If I can convince my boyfriend that greyhounds are ok and then I may get one later. He still loves huskies and I do too but I have greyhounds on my mind a lot lately. So we will see what happens I guess. -Woodpecker- Yes a few have that. Thankfully Drink and Jelly haven't displayed any signs of having it. No they don't. The only time they do is when they are still racing and right after they come off the track. If they don't get enough exercise right then they usually lose their drive for life cause racing is all they know and when they stop they don't know what to do until someone teaches them to become a 'real dog'. -Reina- Yes it does take some time to get used to the home environment. Greyhounds are usually quick to learn and want to please you. You become their 'kennel mate' so of course they adore you and would follow you everywhere you go if you would let them. They are definitely sweet as sugar. Jelly doesn't know how to heel. I'm gonna work on that with him. Drink is pretty much trained to heel. If you stop she will sit down right beside you and wait for you to move again. She doesn't quite have it all the way down but she is pretty close. They are pretty well trained for being off the track for only a little less than a year.

But they I meant HIS greyhounds. Not greyhounds in general. Though his are getting older so they are as much of a problem. c:

-Dreamy- Ah ok. lol sorry. I get what ur trying to say now. And yes some do require more attention than others. Jelly would be happy if we just let him sleep all day and Drink needs a lot of exercise. So I know what you mean. lol and then another friend who has a greyhound doesn't need as much as Drink but needs more than Jelly

-woodpecker- lol if I can get my boyfriend to agree to just one greyhound instead of a husky it will be a miracle. We plan on getting married and then getting a dog or two so he will probably end up getting a husky. *sighs* I won't give up though. lol. I would like one that needs to have more exercise so I can convince myself to exercise like I should. Sad excuse I know but hey whatever works I guess. Besides I love greyhounds and if one needs a home I would be very happy to provide everything it needs.
