Why do people think everything is harmful?

edited September 2009 in General Discussion
Animals are pretty sturdy, and I am tired of seeing some bull about how keeping animals out doors is harmful, ecspecially if it's an animal MEANT for the outdoors.

I was watching some Great Dane videos and someone commented it saying "is this a puppy mill?" >.>
Only becuase they where in a barn stall and there was like 6 of them. How the heck is that considered a puppy mill? O.o
In fact I would think it would be warmer in a barn, and they only had the pups in there to merely play.
And I doubt anyone who owns a puppy mill would waste their time posting videos.
I also saw another where someone said outdoor cats are more stressful than indoor cats and that they should be kept inside becuase living outside shortens their lifespan...yeah, I think not.
Cats are more independent and wild than dogs they need to live an outdoor life, I can understand if you live in the city, but I have known cats that have lived to 20 and they lived an outdoor life.

Get real.

 • Outdoor cats can wander off, annoy neighbors, be taken away by shelters, get killed by something outdoors, etc. So, in all honesty, I dont find it safe for them, and it could potentially cause issues/end their life short. Is it unhealthy? No, I dont see an issue with it, especially if you lived way out in the country where you KNOW your cat is safe, and isnt going to be bothering anyone.

As for the dogs thing... *shrugs* I dont see an issue with it. Its better than letting them roam around as strays. So long as the barn is kept clean, its certainly better then tying them up outside their whole lives or something like that... Would I personally do that? No. If I cant have enough space in my house for dogs, I certainly wouldn't be getting so many to the point where I have to keep them in a barn.

I don't think domesticated dogs/cats were -meant- for the outdoors, aside from walks and playing outside and whatnot. I believe they are made as companions, not to remain wild. Cats that roam about freely outside present problems with reproducing and in turn, causing the issues of feral cats.

But, I can see this topic is very opinionated xD

 • Not trying to cause an argument or something, but I have to agree with Nickel on the cat thing. Both my cats are indoor. Not only could outdoor cats get lost, taken away, or killed by an animal, but they could get hit by a car or something. Although many of my friends have outdoor cats that have always been safe, one of them has had a cat get lost, and one has had a cat get hit by a car. Anyways, I'm not saying it's unhealthy or wrong to let cats outside, just that I think it's safer for them indoors. :)

As for the puppy in the barn thing, honestly? Letting puppies play in a barn is perfectly fine. Some people really over react to every little thing. I toatally agree with you on that avla.

And, I personally do not believe that domesticated dogs should live outside all the time. Dogs like being around humans, and many times get neglected when left outisde all the time. When you're inside, your dog walks past you, you pet her and give her attention. But a lot of times when a dog lives outside, you begin to forget about them and only see them when you feed, groom, exercise or train them. I'm not saying that everyone that keeps their dogs outside does this, I'm sure there are some people that are very good about giving their outdoor dogs attention, it's just my opinon. :?

 • I have actually had 7 strays before I don't have as many now because we gave some away but, I live in a small neighborhood, and my cats never have caused problems, if anything the dogs in this neighborhood have caused more problems.
And since in my area we all know each other my cats are well known and everyone treats them as their own, I can understand if you live in the city where there is a lot of cars, people, etc. but overall my cats can't stand being inside for long periods of time they come in until 6pm and sleep the whole day then go out at night and continue the same routine everyday, they are actually some of the happiest cats while our neighbor across the street keeps her cats inside, I can deffinatly tell that they are depressed and they try to escape daily.

The barn was actually very clean and large, the pups where only in it to play..they had to be about 8-10 weeks old. I would think a barn stable is safer to play in than a house that is full of wires and breakable items.
And it wasn't that the owners didn't have room, they where breeders and as stated above they where in the barn to play.
I did say that some are meant for the outdoors, some dogs are outside dogs like larger breeds, and I believe that they can be kept outside if you provide shelter, GOOD shelter, and access to food and water and as long as the dog/cat is getting companionship with it's owner than I see nothing wrong with it. 8DD
Of course, I could never leave my dogs outside 24/7. But, I am talking about someone who ACTUALLY takes care of their animals WHILE it's an outside animal..not someone who would forget about it because I find it hard to believe that anyone could forget if they had a pet.
 • In my opinion, if your dog cant stay inside because it is too big...get a smaller dog =P

I'm not a fan of people keeping dogs outside for their whole lives, but perhaps that's because my old neighbors left theirs outside 24/7, and it was sad how excited they would get when I came over to pet them, because NO ONE took the time to even say hi to them. They threw food out there for them, and that was it. And that tends to happen when people put dogs outside, because, in comparison, that detaches them from the family.

I guess I just treat my animals too much like part of the family, and could never leave them outside. They are part of our home, so maybe I just cant see in the same perspective as other people.

 • I agree, I wouldn't leave any of my animals out 24/7 as I said in my previous post.
But, when I was at the age of 5 we had a rottie and lab mix and they stayed outside all day and all night it didn't detach them from the family I practically stayed outside all day to play with them.
I'm not talking about those who abuse animals, but those who care for them even though they live outside. ;D

Exactly. Why get a dog if you can't even take the time to pay attention to it?

 • Daily interactions are what dogs love. A dog doesn't have to be 'abused' to be forgotten sometimes. My neighbors weren't 'abusive' they just didn't find the time for their animals.

If you're really busy with homework, and your dog is outside, there is a slim chance you're going to go outside to see it. If its inside, they can come lay next to you, or brush up against you, and you can pet them and ensure them that you care.

If any of my dogs were left outside for an hour alone, they would go insane xD They constantly think they have to lay around us. Just being in the same room with others prevents a dog from becoming lonely.

And once again, I share the feeling of my dogs being part of my family. And, I dont leave my family outside xD

Excatly! That's excatly what I was saying. It's not that you're a mean, abusive owner, it's that your dogs just don't get as much attention. I mean, I love cuddling with my dogs. But, how often would you go outside on a really cold winter day, or on a really hot summer day, and take a nice long few minutes to cuddle with your dog?

 • I consider not having time for an animal that you own, abuse.
My dogs actually enjoy being outside for hours on end, and I have poodles and a daschund. They will stay outside for 3+ hours and playplayplay, and if you try calling them inside they just look at you like you're an idiot and countinue to play, even the cats join in.
My dogs are in no way "outside" dogs they stay inside for the night and usually like to be outside during the day, they come in when they want, etc. I also see my pets as family, but they are animals, not people.

It would be more close to abandoning.
Even though you are there? xD
 • The word for the dog being ignored/uncared for is neglect. Abuse is more along the lines of kicking/hitting/beating up the animal.

And, no sense in getting upset over what others are saying, this topic, like I said, is an opinionated one.

 • I hope I'm not making people upset.

I'm not upset.....everyone has their own opinions.

Anyways, I agree with both of you. In a way, neglecting an animal is abuse. But....in a way it's not. :?

Neglecting as in not caring for is awful, but not giving them any attention is just as bad.
