Meet Joey!!

I got a new pup a few days ago. She is a 6 wk. old Chocolate Labrador Retriever/Blue Merle Australian Shepherd. The dam was the Lab and sire was the Aussie.
The dam had 10 pups in all, and when I had went to buy Joey, there was only 5 left. She was supposedly a "problem" puppy. I was told she was an escape artist, and loved causing trouble. But this little pup is anything but.
The night I brought her home, she slept next to my head on the floor automatically. She didnt even attempt to go on the bed. She will wander around the house, and even go outside to go potty by herself at night, then find her spot back on the floor.
She's already getting the "potty" command within 2 days. I've also taught her to sit, lay down, and stay. She even herds bunnies! She likes to "nibble" on them, and gets in trouble for that, but is merely playing.
She attaches herself to me at the hip. And stays on my left side right next to my feet as we walk. She walks great off-leash, and goes everywhere with me. She even does awesomely in the car by herself. She's an awesome pup.

She was born with an "undeveloped eye", which is where the Merle Gene hit twice, or so the vet had told me. The top half of her right eye is green, then splits right in half, and turns into ice blue at the bottom. The pupil also "spills" into the iris. It makes her look very unique, and she's a one-of-a-kind. And she's not quite a "Red Merle", but more of a "Chocolate Merle"... If that's even possible. There was 3 Merles out of the entire litter, and Joey had a "twin brother", who was picked out just before I got Joey. But he didnt have her eye "defect".

Anyway... Here's Joey.
Let me know what you think.

<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... n/Joey.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey1.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... /Joey1.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey2.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... /Joey2.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey3.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... /Joey3.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey4.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... /Joey4.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey5.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... /Joey5.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey6.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... /Joey6.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey7.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... /Joey7.jpg

<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey1-1.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... oey1-1.jpg
<a href="http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss151/dodgersuperman/Joey-1.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss15 ... • She's a very brave puppy too. She's now jumping off of everything. And even learned how to climb into and out of the bunny cage (it even has netting on the top), and has even learned to escape her puppy pen. But she's doing awesome. Hasnt pottied in the house for about 2 days now. And is sleeping through the night now too. And is going to the door when she needs to go out. She's getting more vocal. Which is what I wanted. She loves to growl when she plays. But doesnt bite hands or anything like that (I discouraged it from day one) and she gets the "growling and scruff shake" method pretty good.
I found out that she was given to us at 5.5 wks. old. The people just updated their CL ad, and had put the pups at 7 wks. now... So she's a bit young. But Im glad that I got her pretty young, so she learns a lot, more quicker. I growl at her, or grab her by the scruff and move her away from what she's doing badly (such as chewing on something she's not supposed to), and she gets it usually after attempting it twice.

She now "loads em up" in the truck by herself to go for rides... She's learned quite a bit from watching our other dogs. All around a very great dog.

Best $80 I've ever spent!

We also found out today that she is completely blind in her right eye. And is partially blind in her left eye. Turns out she uses her ears and nose to find where she needs to go. But she was bumping into things every once in awhile the last few days as we're moving things around and packing things up, cause we're moving to a new house. Her pupils do not go bigger or smaller when light hits them either. And will use her ears and turn her head in the direction of sounds. But the vet said that she was most likely blind from birth, so she had become accustomed to it. Just makes this little girl so much more special. (I LOVE blind/deaf dogs. I used to have a litter of 7 Aussie Sheps. that we got from a neighbor who bred his merle to merle Aussies and had an entire litter this way. So we took em all, and found them homes. But kept 3, 2 have passed away in the last 10 yrs. though.)

I'll keep updating and adding more pics.

 • She is gorgeous! I think her eyes are beautiful and I, too, have always been inspired by handicapped dogs - they don't let it phase them at all! She sure is a sweetie and I wish you luck with her! I have a male lab puppy and he had issues with "potty" up until like 6 months...XD.

 • yeah, we're going to eat our meat buns. Although we have yet to do so. Joey is growing quickly like a weed. But is allowing her blindness to keep her from going outside and pottying at night, and she sometimes has mistakes in the house :S Other than that, she's doing excellent.

She now knows how to bark on command (speak), crawl across the floor, give high-5's, and grab her bowls when she's hungry. She even grooms our new kittens.

I've got tons of new pics of her. And oh boy is she getting big :( But oh so gorgeous!

I will add some later today :D

 • I am so in love with the idea of -only- getting rescued/shelter dogs.
I really admire you for that. And when I'm old enough, I've vowed to never get any dog UNLESS he/she is from the pound or rescued from a bad situation.
 • I made a post for all the animals. It tells all their stories and everything.

 • Joey's actually a very mellow pup.
I was really expecting her to be like how our purebred Labs or Aussies were, with MUCH more energy though, as she was deemed the "energetic trouble making pup" from her litter. Joey is very mellow to say the least. She is perfect inside, and is very calm. We go on 3 walks a day (45 mins. to 2 hrs. depending on conditions), and just one usually does it for her. She is able to, however, run about 25-27 miles per hour. I took my snowmachine/snowmobile out the otherday, and had allowed her to follow me. She ran ahead of me the entire time, for over a mile (I stayed in the 25-27 mph range the entire time. AND she's only 14" tall (up to her shoulderblades) and did great. She even rode on the back of the machine with me and just sat there, I thought that was pretty cool.

But she's really got the perfect mixture of energy. Calm when she needs to be, and rowdy when she needs to be. :)
