• personally i love the look of protective breeds.
i want something that looks scary because i want people to be afraid befor they enter my house and i have to test the theory that a dog will protect me and i would rather not put me or the dog through that
 • I'd say no to the akita too. They're very... stand-offish. They're not really people-dogs. They'll follow you from room to room, but don't expect them to shower you with affection. Also, you have to be REALLY careful. Most akita you will find are American Akita. This means they were crossed with GSDs sometime back with America ran into Japan and killed any dog that wasn't pregnant with GSD pups, or part GSD.

American Akitas are BIG dogs, and are more temperamental and aggressive. They shed a TON. I wouldn't suggest them being apartment dogs, as they usually need a job to do, as they're working dogs usually. Also, akita are very neutral. They aren't likely to attack strangers, but they also aren't likely to love on them.

Also, akita, like other protection breeds, are under a possible breed ban.

 • yes i don't think i will get one because of the fur issue although once i have the room and proper living space i may get one. but right now i live in a warm climate so the akita chow and possibly the GSD are out due to their coats
 • Neapolatine (However you spell it...) Mastiffs tend to be calm, large, and short furred, good protection dogs. Same goes for bull and regular mastiffs as well :)
