English Bulldog(s) *PUPPy FOUND (1 choice so far, last page)

edited May 2010 in General Discussion
I am saving up for an English Bulldog. :D
I would prefer male, but if I happen to come across a female than I will consider.
It won't be for a few months before I get one, my boyfriend said not now - buttt I always make him cave in. XD
I bombarded him all day yesterday with pictures, videos, and information. XD
I plan to hold off on my Great Danes for about 5 years or so, so that me and my boyfriend have financial footing for breeding.
I've always had a secret love for English Bulldogs, but it didn't start coming out until recently.
I would like to get one from a shelter, but I haven't found barley any near my area in shelters - so if it comes down to a breeder I will be talking to my cousin about getting one from their English Bulldog breeder.
I mainly want a companion to keep me company when Jeffrey is gone through out the day - but if I get one from a breeder I plan to put the money I put into it and bring it to local shows.
I figured the English Bulldog would be perfect for when me and Jeffrey move - they aren't HUGE but they aren't a small little Chihuahua. XD Not to mention they are good with children and other animals, and the best part they are goofy little creatures. :P
If it is male I plan to name it Ruckus.
Female, I am naming it Lyla (I've always wanted a dog named Lyla. XD)

Does anyone have/had a English Bulldog?

I mean how can you resist this face.

<img src="http://i42.tinypic.com/dniu5w.jpg"; alt="http://i42.tinypic.com/dniu5w.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

  • Awwww, I haven't had one, but I know people who have just love them. They are unreal when they're puppies. I think I would have one if I somehow couldn't physically handle large dogs anymore. They are so confident but in a little body. But there is a very specific look that I like.. the ones in shows are generally not the way I like them (which is kind of out of the ordinary for me, but I'm finding that some breeds in shows are getting actually away from the original standard).

Getting off topic now, but yeah. I hope you'll be able to get one and that it's healthy and doesn't have any nasal issues.

All the best!

  • Not a fan of the breed looks wise, but my neighbors had one for years. They used her for breeding only and let her run loose most of the time. She and my Boston Terrier got along well for awhile before Jewel (my dog) decided that she didn't like other females. Daisy (the EB) had a sweet temperament. I was really upset when my neighbors sold her. Their reason? Because she got Pyometra and couldn't be bred anymore. Grrr.... They sold her pups for $1200 each. I just can't justify paying that much for a dog... Oh well.
  • That's so sad, Zagari!
$1200 for a BYB puppy. That's horrible. Several GOOD breeders I know sell their puppies for like $800. I will have to save up $3k if I want to buy a Corso though. Then again, I saw a EB in the pet store for $5k CDN. Is that crazy or what.

  • I had English bulldogs growing up. My mother intended to breed(our male came from top lines that shocked the vet who specializes in the breed) but the female ended up having a spinal problems which caused her lots of pain and made her unable to walk as she got bigger/grew. Eventually we had her put to sleep at a young age. The vet said there was no way for anyone to know that it was going to happen, and unfortunately it does pop up in the breed from time to time. We were out a lot of money, and a great dog. After our male passed away right before we moved, we never got another one, but we got a pekingese not to long ago and she's like a floppy fuzzy bulldog.

Bulldogs are expensive, prone to have many problems, and need to be checked by a vet at least twice a year for various problems that can occur in their eyes, nose, hips, etc. Our bulldogs cost us a lot to keep, but they were great dogs and a childhood memory I'll never forget.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • @Reina-I LOVE the way they look as puppies (and adults to), I like the little rope of skin they have over their nose it's adorable. :P I've been deciding on a small dog because me and Jeffrey's first house is going to be in a trailer with a small to medium sized backyard - and since they don't require as much exercise and prefer the indoors I figured the Bulldog would be perfect. I will still have my cat, Simba<3 and as much as I love him he does his own thing most of the time. I wanted my own personal companion to keep me company and guard the house when Jeffrey isn't home. (of course no animal could take the place of Simba. XD)

@Zag-$1200 for a BYB? That is ridiculous! IF I buy from a breeder I want my money's worth, the majority of the ones that I have seen for 1k+ their pups have champion bloodlines, are champion sired, are bred for temperament, health, etc.

@Sushi-Aw, that's sad. :(
Luckily for me my boyfriend is going to college to be a vet. :D
I plan to have extra money set aside for each dog just in case something pops up.
  • I have an English Bulldog, female, named Sally.

They're cute, cuddling, and playful when smaller. When they get older they sleep most of the day, lay by your feet, occasional burst of poisonous neurotoxins that'll have you running away, covering your nose (If you get what I mean), playful but not as active, and easily worn down.

Sally had birth complications which cost $1000 and she recently had to get her tail removed for some purpose which I wasn't told. That cost us a lot. We barely have money to feed all of ourselves to begin with but enough to keep her healthy. And before I get a quick 'you shouldn't own a dog cause you're poor', I don't want to hear it from anyone. Just saying and I'm not being agressive. Just putting up a shield just in case.

Other than that, you should ask thoroughly if the breeder had problems with their bulldogs medically.

BUT other than laying in the middle of the hall and being in the way, Sally is a totally awesome dog haha. She's very protective of the kids however. She doesn't let any other dog by them. She loves strangers and goes up with a waggling rear (Doesn't have a tail, well stub, so she shakes her butt instead!). She -hates- guns and tears at them even if they're plastic. We're not sure where that came from.

Conclusion: Protective is a yes. Children are loved. So bulldogs are good if you have a close family and plan to get another dog during puppy stage unless you want some mild fighting.

Good luck! :D

  • Thank you!
Sally sounds like a charm, and it's great that you are still able to care for her.

I found a private breeder and I emailed them today, this is what they replied.

Hi,

So you're interested in adopting a bulldog puppy? Well you can be
assured you have come to the right place. We are honest people that
raise English bulldog puppies that are healthy, wrinkled, awesome
pedigrees and have a massive bone structure and build. They're just
down right adorable. So take a look below at the babies we have in our
nursery.

We love are bulldog babies and will only let them go with people that
know and understand the needs of the bulldog breed. Our bulldog
puppies look and act like bulldogs are suppose to, with lots of
wrinkles and great temperaments.

All prices includes air shipping and crate. All our puppies come with
full papers, puppy health check, one year health warranty, current vaccinations
and wormings, and an awesome puppy starter kit. Our puppy kit
contains: mother/sibling scented baby blanket, so you can hold your
fur baby and snuggle, a baby wash cloth so you can clean their little
face wrinkles, a milkbone tennis ball so you can play fetch with your
new bundle of fur joy, a chew toy for healthy teeth and gums (and to
save your shoes), shot record, and a few other surprises. And support
from me for the life of the puppy.

We are asking for $250 adoption charges which will go for shipping and
all flight charges and puppy will be deliver right at your home
address.

So as you can see, they are only asking shipping charges, they aren't about money and they provide blankets, treats, etc. along with a one year warranty and several other things. They also said if I place a $70 deposit that they will hold my pup for however long that they need me to.

And here is the guy I chose<3

<img src="http://i43.tinypic.com/wqvds8.jpg"; alt="http://i43.tinypic.com/wqvds8.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

I'm still asking several questions, but I think this is a good deal and the pups look healthy as far as I can see.
  • I would be uneasy about anyone offering to ship you the dog like that. It sounds great and the puppies adorable but a lot of the scams certainly over here offer that. Most breeders won't let you have a puppy without meeting you first. You also want to meet the parents and see where the puppies are kept and what condition they're in
  • OMG that's a fat little guy.

As the person above me said...

The price doesn't sound right. I was looking at getting my best friend a husky... and ads like that were everywhere.
Everything i looked into was a scam. Be very very careful.
Those dogs go for 1,200 to 1,500 in my area, so 250 doesn't sound reasonable.

He's adorable. :O
But-I agree with what danae11 said, goes the same for horses and whatever else.
And..I also see a grammar mistake. >.<;;
*points to what I quoted and highlighted*
It should be "our" and not "are".
I'd take that as something wrong. I know people make mistakes, but that'd just be something that made me extra wary..

  • Be very very very careful about breeders that you can't meet in person. I had a friend who was looking into getting a puppy ( a yorkie) and the breeder said they would provide all sorts of things and asked only for 250$ for the re-homing and 65$ for shipping.

My friend paid and waited weeks for her puppy. Eventually she tried to get back in contact with the breeder and they had poofed with all her money. Lesson of the day; Don't get scammed. D:

If you are serious about that breeder, ask for a phone number so you can call and ask to hear the puppies (Sounds ridiculous, but a real breeder will have no problem with it).

:D

  • I'm getting a puppy next year. Even to go on the waiting list I had to go to the breeder, she took me around showed me the dogs I met the mum of the planned litter and various relatives. I was then questioned for an hour about knowledge of dogs and how the puppy would be raised. Admittedly I'm getting a giant schnauzer so not a breed you want in an inexperienced home but still to me that's a good breeder. I'll be going out at 4 weeks to choose my puppy as well
  • I have no local breeders near me, the only way I could get a pup is through shipping. I am still asking questions and no 100% decision has been made.
  • I would still make sure you atleast call and hear that there are, in fact, puppies there.
If you have webcam, seeing the puppies via webcam with the breeder would also be a good thing.
    az7051.jpg<3
  • I would if possible want to go and see the puppies anyway. There are none local to me that breeder was an hours flight away but I wouldn't get a puppy just shipped I would want to go meet the breeder, see what kind of conditions they were kept in you could end up with one from a puppy mill otherwise. At the very least ask to see a video of the puppies with mum and contact details for the dad's owners if they don't own him.
  • You guys should know that I am a big time breeder beware. xD
They emailed me their number, and I asked why they are for "free" and they said these are for adoption and not a breeding stock.
  • But then why did they breed them? Even puppies the breeder considers not breeding/show quality would still be sold to vetted home
  • Why would you "adopt" out registered puppies?
Were they not a planned litter or...
That just seems odd.

It's limited registration, they said they do not "sell".
  • That doesn't even make sense. English bulldogs are ridiculously expensive to raise they would be losing a lot of money by just adopting them. That's why they cost so much there is generally artifical insemination, c-section, breeder has to be with puppies constantly for the first few weeks as they can't be left alone with mum. Often they have to be tube fed as well. That's not counting worming, vet checks, the price of the puppy pack. It's just too good to be true and that is suspicious.
  • I am still asking questions. :P
Nothing is 100%, I'm going to ask if these are rescues or if they bred them

That is just the pup I chose from the 3 they had.

I also talked to another breeder who will have some due in June for $1800, 100$ deposit to hold the puppy.
  • Second one sounds better but personally I would contact the breed club and ask them to recommend good breeders. Often they have a high code of ethics for members.
  • Okay, they just told me that these pups where rescues.
  • Are they an actual rescue? They told you at first they were breeders now they're saying rescue don't even think about it find another breeder
  • I agree with Danae. Don't get scammed! To get a good dog, you should be paying for it (Well,a puppy at least from a purebred line.)

They are breeders and rescuers, that's why I said these aren't breeding stock - I just didn't know if they bred them or rescued them because I didn't ask and they hadn't said until I asked.
  • Do they have a website or anything that we can look at? You can PM me the link if you want. Something doesn't seem right here and as far as I'm concerned if a breeder doesn't seem right I wouldn't go near them

I asked and they said their website is under construction - they just said that the pups and parents where dumped off on her and she said she just wants to give them to good homes and not to "sell" them as a breeder. O-o
  • I'd be cautious about the rescue, not because they are a rescue/breeders, but because they are so far from you and it's easy to get scammed. It might be burdensome, but if possible you should drive out to see if they really have the dog, or request a picture of the puppy with a current news article to confirm he is real.
