Why do You Even Own a Dog?

edited August 2010 in Vent
Recently my friend and her mom told me about their friend. She said they have a beautiful golden retriever that they keep chained in the basement. She said this dog is never aloud upstairs with the family. It can go outside, but when it's not outdoors it's stuck in the basement. She said it's not even a nice basement, just a cold cement floor that this poor dog has to sleep on. She also said they have a cat that they spoil and love to death. They're always cuddling it and loving it while the dog gets no attention. My friend's mom told me that she suggested they just sell the dog if they weren't going to pay any attention to him. They replyed "Oh no, we love him!" My friend's always make 'jokes" and hints that maybe this dog isn't getting the best care but the people don't pay any attention. I don't know these people-but I do know that they should not have a dog if they're not going to pay attention do it. It makes me so mad when animals are neglected like that. Sure, it has food and water and excercise, but what about playtime, attention, and love? I wish I could just go there and take the dog and give it a real home. :x

 • Reminds me of my step-cousins.
They also got a Golden. My cousins loved him, then a year later they got a little Pembroke Welsh Corgi.. Who is the brattiest most impolite dog I've ever met, but she replaced the beautiful sweet Golden.
He's now living in a kennel they rarely clean.. If ever.. In the backyard..
I wanted to report them for animal neglect (Since they don't clean the kennel enough) but my mom said no because
1. They're 'family' and they help us out. and 2. If we do we won't be able to take him in our selves, though we'd love to.

 • It's so sad. Even the nicest people can be neglecting their dogs. I just don't understand how you could take a loving, beautiful animal like that and lock it away with no love.

 • My parents used to be friends with a family that owned a German Shorthaired Pointer. Beautiful, friendly dog. <3
They lock her up in a cold room with a bed, food, water, etc. and she's not allowed in any other room of the house.
They say it's because their son taught her to eat food off the table, jump on furniture, and jump fences (when she's outside, they tie her up to a doghouse).
She gets a daily walk as far as I know. She's good with other dogs, kids, adults, anything.

She's probably old now, the last time I saw her, they'd actually brought her camping and let her roam the private property, which I was glad to see. She was also sitting in her own little camping chair -- like my own dog had taught her. xD

But I feel bad, she deserves more than just a daily walk and rare attention.
 • I know. It's more than just brushing your dog, walking them, and making sure they have food and water. They're not animals that can just be pet once or twice a day. They need to be with people.
