I'm getting a Great Dane! *Pics added*

Some of you may know and others may not, but I work at my local humane society. We get hundreds of animals in and out every year. Today, right before closing time, a man pulled up in a work-type van. There was a huge Great Dane in the passenger seat. We thought that he was there to pick up his other dog... boy were we wrong. He wanted to drop off the Dane.

The man told us that he breeds Great Danes and the big dog in the van was the father of his last litter. The dog is 7 1/2 years old. His face is almost completely white. He's old. He told us that the father was getting into nasty fights with his son, which is bigger than Gem, the sire. There were three staff members there, none of us have any authority to take in any animals without first clearing it with our director. The man said that he's tried and tried to get rid of the dog but no one will buy him. If we didn't take him, he was going to shoot him when he left. (That's the oldest trick in the book...) Us three girls had a mini meeting and I told them that we are taking the dog but he's got to leave a donation to help cover the dog's medical bills. The man agreed and now the dog is in our care. I take full responsibility for taking the dog in and I fully intend on adopting him or at least long-term fostering him. Whatever the director agrees to. She hasn't even seen the dog yet.

Gem is a huge fawn Great Dane. He's covered in scars and his ears are ripped up. He's 7 1/2 and his black mask is almost all white. I instantly fell in love. Great Danes are my second favorite breed... only behind the great American Pit Bull Terrier. I was holding out for my show puppy which will be here next summer but I think this Dane needs me now. Who's going to adopt a senior Dane that needs medical treatment? Not many people in my small community. We have a hard enough time getting our healthy young dogs adopted. I'm going to talk to the director tomorrow and see what we can work out. I'm not worried about him and Emily getting along... I can always crate and rotate dogs. Not a big deal. I am worried about his people skills though. He's extremely fearful. A huge dog plus being fearful isn't a good combo. I'm 5'8" tall and his withers come up past my hips. Let's hope for the best! I want him SO bad. His current name is Gem but if he does end up coming home with me, that name is going. I don't care how old he is. lol

Edit:

<img src="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0473.jpg"; alt="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0473.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0474.jpg"; alt="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0474.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0476.jpg"; alt="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0476.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0475.jpg"; alt="http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h239/ZagariPitBullLover/100_0475.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

  • Aww, he sounds very cute! I hope you get to adopt him, Zag. :)
Good luck!
  • Haha... I'll see what I can do picture wise. My camera is in the shop. I'd have to use the shelter's camera. We'll see what happens. I want him more than anything right now. But maybe I'm counting my chickens before they hatch, if ya know what I mean. I'm worried about him getting neutered and going under. Eek! Also, he's going to have to pass his safer test before I would ever bring him home. He just came in so his fear is understandable. His hold is up in 5 days and that's when he'll be tested for everything.
  • Oh, well I'm sure he'll pass. :)
  • "Gem" is coming home in three days... that puts it at, Sunday? I'm thrilled! I'm pretty sure he's going to be a long-term foster. Because of his age, we've all agreed that he won't be neutered. I'm slightly disappointed but I want what's best for him. He looks like a big dufus. lol He's got a "Duh" expression on his face at all times. Took him out today and he walks really well on a leash. Though I did have a dane mix when I was a kid, I've never walked a dog so big. He's massive! I love him so much already! I'm lucky that I talked to the director so quickly because she was in the process of calling Great Dane Rescue. She thinks he'll be better off here with me. And don't worry everyone. I've definately done my homework on the breed... been doing it for the past three years.

I took pictures of "Gem" with the shelter's camera today. I'll try to get them up here tomorrow. Now the hard part... a name. With a new home comes a new name. He doesn't answer to Gem anyway. I actually don't think he has very good hearing. Anyhow, I've got a list of possible names but I really want something German. :))
  • I've always wanted to name a dog Blitz... xD;

That's great! I would be thrilled too.
Can't wait to see him!

Oh - and I can think up some names, if you want. XD
  • Blitz is cute and German!

I really want to name him something German!
  • You can Google german male dog names? XD
  • Congrats! I'm so glad you are able to help him, or at least try to.
Clearly he hasn't had an easy life, so hopefully he'll really open up with a little TLC.

Blitz is cute and German!
I think that's a cute name!
I wish I could give suggestions, but the only German names/words I know are of bad people from WWII or WWII era German weapons, which aren't very suitable for a dog...?

  • Funny you should say that PrinceSushi. lol During school, WWII was always my favorite to study. It's been a long time since then and I've forgotten a lot. Last night was I researching WWII to get name ideas. Yes, list weapon names. :mrgreen:
  • Edited the first post with pictures.
  • He's adorable, it's so nice that you are taking on an older dog. Good luck!
Ah, I did a huge report on the weaponry of WWII for my junior or senior project...not sure which one since I did both in 1 year. My brother is a huge fan of WWII, particularly the weaponry of WWII. He favors the American M1 Garand, while I like the German MG42 LMG, which is nicknamed the bonesaw.
I'll just use common names and nicknames since names like MG42 might be silly.

Luger (P08 Pistol, by could refer to almost any gun made by Luger)
Mauser (Mauser C96, but could refer to almost any gun made by Mauser)
Gewehr (means gun/rifle)
Sturmgewehr (Storm rifle, STG 44/MP 43. Translated as Assault(storm) Rifle)
Hitlersage (Nickname for the MG42, which translates to Hilter's Saw)
Karabiner (Translates to carbine, which is a shortened rifle)
Panzerschreck (An anti-tank rocket. Means Armor Terror)
Panzer (A German tank. Means Armor)
Panzerfaust(Another anti-tank weapon. Means Armor Fist)
Flammenwerfer (Flame thrower)

Misc stuff.
Gestapo (Short for something I can't remember, but it's the German secret police)
Blitzkrieg (Lightning War, used to describe German war tactics)
Jager (hunter/fighter)
Reich (empire)
Ritterkreuz (Iron Cross, Ritter actually means knight, while kreuz means cross(example being hakenkreuz, meaning hook cross a.k.a the swastika)

That's all I have off the top of my head, but I got an idea. You should try looking up the German words for military ranks to see if there are any you like. Unfortunately I only know about 2, and I'm totally not sure of their spelling.
----

Nice pictures. He definitely looks like he needs a really strong name.

  • He's home!!!!

The old dog (because I don't call him Gem) is amazing! Okay... he's old and he doesn't do anything. lol I'm super surprised that he and Emily adore each other. Em can walk under him without ducking at all. It's so freaking cute. We went for a walk on our trails today. He walks well on the leash but if he does see something he'll pull after it. He LOVES riding in the car. It looked like I hard a small horse in my tiny truck on the way home from the shelter. Even though the shelter's vet tech doesn't think he should be neutered, I'm going to ask the vet anyway. His danglies are very ugly and there's a lump on there that isn't normal. He's got to go in for his Rabies vaccine anyway, so we might as well make a day of it.

Emily loves the water and the only time she growled at her new brother was when he tried to get in the pond with her. I know it's not a desired behavior but it was really funny. We went to a different area of the pond and the old dog went in up to his elbows. He got scared. lol It was a good day.

Whoever owned him before painted his nails blue. It's cracking me up! I think I'm going to repaint them. And... he drools like crazy! I felt like I had a swimming pool in my truck when we got home. He also snores and grunts a lot. I love this dog!

We're trying to think of country, German, or sophisticated names. lol A wide variety but thus far Remington, Wrangler, and Axel are at the top of the list. He doesn't listen to much but if you have food, he will sit and lay down. So he's not completely deaf. Just selective hearing. He's amazing!
  • Jager's another good name. xD One of my favored terms. *facepalm* Jager, Schneider, and Panzer were all forms of this one robot thing from an anime I love. xD;

What about Zero? I like number names for some reason. xD Wrangler's a good name too tho'.

  • another german word i learned is "rache". it means revenge. xD
just a thought. ;D
    bluehh.
  • His name is Kaiser. He's settled in well.
Last night, he killed one of my ducks. I don't blame him at all. It was my fault for dropping his leash.
RIP Johnny
  • Aw. Kaiser is a cute name.

RIP Johnny. D:
  • AWE!!! he is so adorable...^_$ :P
