Some of you may know and others may not, but I work at my local humane society. We get hundreds of animals in and out every year. Today, right before closing time, a man pulled up in a work-type van. There was a huge Great Dane in the passenger seat. We thought that he was there to pick up his other dog... boy were we wrong. He wanted to drop off the Dane.

The man told us that he breeds Great Danes and the big dog in the van was the father of his last litter. The dog is 7 1/2 years old. His face is almost completely white. He's old. He told us that the father was getting into nasty fights with his son, which is bigger than Gem, the sire. There were three staff members there, none of us have any authority to take in any animals without first clearing it with our director. The man said that he's tried and tried to get rid of the dog but no one will buy him. If we didn't take him, he was going to shoot him when he left. (That's the oldest trick in the book...) Us three girls had a mini meeting and I told them that we are taking the dog but he's got to leave a donation to help cover the dog's medical bills. The man agreed and now the dog is in our care. I take full responsibility for taking the dog in and I fully intend on adopting him or at least long-term fostering him. Whatever the director agrees to. She hasn't even seen the dog yet.

Gem is a huge fawn Great Dane. He's covered in scars and his ears are ripped up. He's 7 1/2 and his black mask is almost all white. I instantly fell in love. Great Danes are my second favorite breed... only behind the great American Pit Bull Terrier. I was holding out for my show puppy which will be here next summer but I think this Dane needs me now. Who's going to adopt a senior Dane that needs medical treatment? Not many people in my small community. We have a hard enough time getting our healthy young dogs adopted. I'm going to talk to the director tomorrow and see what we can work out. I'm not worried about him and Emily getting along... I can always crate and rotate dogs. Not a big deal. I am worried about his people skills though. He's extremely fearful. A huge dog plus being fearful isn't a good combo. I'm 5'8" tall and his withers come up past my hips. Let's hope for the best! I want him SO bad. His current name is Gem but if he does end up coming home with me, that name is going. I don't care how old he is. lol

Edit:

<img src="
