Miniature Horses?

Well, there are tons for sale around me, and they have perked my interest. I did some research, and noticed they require a lot of work just like horses do... but I wanna hear from other people who own them or have done a lot more research/are more knowledgeable than me.

I certainly won't be getting one anytime soon... I'd want to be out of college and have a job before taking on such a responsibility, but it's definitely something I'd look into in the future.

So, my basic questions:

- How much space is needed to own one?
- How much time needs to be put into one?
- What kind of training needs to be done with them?
- How much do they cost monthly (feed, maintenance, etc.)
- How much do they cost yearly (adding in vet bills, etc.)
- What kind of vet bills would I be looking at?
- How long do they live for/what are health concerns?
- What are they like to own? (Personality, how they interact with people, etc.)
- What type of accessories would you need to buy for one?

Lotsa questions, but I like to be well informed. If theres any other information you'd think is necessary that doesnt belong to any of those questions, I'd like to know as well :D

Also, any helpful websites would be nice. I don't know which ones are reliable or whatnot, as I have seen different information depending on the sources and whatnot ;D

Thanks :D

  • My grandmother owned one named Spanky that I grew up with until he got injured about 5 years ago. I believe she had him before I was born, so he was probably between 15-20 when he had to be euthanized. Personality wise I always thought he was kind of silly. He was kept on half and acre(I'm estimating, might have been a little bit more than that), and he loved running so much that he would actually try to get my grandmother's dobermans to run with him. He also liked playing in water, whether it be sticking his head in the trough or acting silly with a sprinkler/hose. Other than being silly, he got along with people really well, and was never super skittish. Most of the time he'd just follow people around in hopes of being brushed or getting a carrot.

Care wise, my grandmother and mother would always say they might as well have been feeding a (regular) horse. The vet didn't come out very often since the farrier did basically everything. With trimming and extras(worming, floating, vaccines, etc.) it was about $50-$100 each visit(about every 2 months), so I'm estimating vet + farrier fees would be around $500-$1000 depending on what they are charging in your area, and how much your horse needs. My father basically worked with horses as a living while I was a kid, so while he was alive we were often able to cut way back on vet bills by knowing how to treat and vaccinate horses.

Training would depend on what you want the animal for. Spanky was saddle trained while there were children, but once we started to grow he became just a pet. Other than that, it's important they are trained to be lead on a halter if needed, groomed, and trimmed(hooves) without much of a fuss. It might also be a good idea to get them used to going in and out of a trailer without getting scared.

Accessory wise you should invest in grooming tools. Spanky was a hairy little guy that needed routine grooming, because we didn't clip him. My grandmother had a shedding blade(his favorite), currycombs, a stiff bristle brush, and a comb for his mane. He loved being brushed.

Sorry, that's about all I can say. Spanky was probably the last horse I was around, so I just don't remember a lot of it. Hopefully someone with more experience will give you better answers. Also, good luck with your research.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • I'll get hold of Vincent's mom this weekend if you'd like me to. She bred and trained miniature horses for several years. ^^ She had them all trained to pull small carriages. xD Just drop me a message if you'd like me to ask her when I get a chance (probably Sunday).

  • Thanks Sushi :D I was kind of thinking they would have silly personalities... is what I was looking for xD They all seem really friendly and whatnot. I have an acre of land at the moment... but like I said, I don't plan to get one until I have a job, which means moving out and hopefully finding a couple acres of land >.> My parents are moving up to where they have over 100 acres of land someday, so if I stick close to them I'm sure they'd be more than happy to keep it there as well.

I wouldn't want it trained for riding or anything, just a pet. I've always loved horses, and those seem like they'd be a little less work than a full sized horse (don't have -all- the same training and whatnot)

That'd be great :D Thanks.

  • I can't really help with this question, but I also had a question about minis-do they need to be kept together? I'm also interested in minis and even though I've done a lot of ersearch I can't seem to find an answer. Some say they need to be kept in pairs and others don't. Thanks.
