He wants a male husky named Shadow, but the one we are looking at right now is already coming to the name of Zephy.<br><br>So do you guys have any more names for either a male/female german or a male/female husky?? =D<br><br>Which dog do you prefer? =D

  • German Shepherd, definitely. But only because I'm terribly biased and love mine to death. :P

<br><br>It's such a hard choice too! I love both breeds xD
  • Depends what you are looking for. Huskies are very stubborn and need to run and be exercised a lot or they have the tendency to run away. They hate being groomed and usually hate water.<br><br>German Shepherds need lots of exercise as well, but they can also become territorial. They can be extremely smart.<br><br>It also depends on where you live. If you live somewhere where it is hot all the time then it's not really fair to the Husky who is bred to outlast freezing temperatures. <br><br>Anyways, in the end the decision is yours. I prefer huskies myself. I like the name Zephyr though! You don't hear it too often!
  • Hence the german since we have 70 degree weather at <span style="color:#FF0000"><span style="text-decoration:underline"><span style="font-style:italic"><span style="font-weight:bold">CHRISTMAS</span></span></span></span> (DX)

<br><br>Lucky! I'm proud to be Canadian and all, but if we could get just a little less snow then I would be happy. Just one big snowfall for Christmas day so that it's all pretty and white and the next day it all melts.
  • Haha Thanks Vampy! =) I LOVE Germans and it does get hot here 0.0
  • I would go with the german shepard. My uncle and mom worked together with german shepard police dogs so i have always loved them. They are really smart but can be really friendly. As for me i have an American Bulldog and Pitbull mix.

  • Yup, they're labeled a "dangerous breed" and therefore anyone who owns one must find a different home outside of the province or it will be put down. :(

<br><br>in my opinion that is COMPLETELY stupid. Its not the breed that is "dangerous" its the way their owners raise/treat them. Being put down just because of your breed is just wrong.. I strongly disagree with it.. =/ I have known MANY pits and they are ALL lovable =D My brothers pit can snap another dogs leg in half with one bite (proven.. he was protecting my nephew from the other dog) yet he jumps on me and licks me and wags his tail when ever im around him =)
  • I'd say shepherd. I've never ever ever been fond of huskies. They're beautiful dogs, sure. But they're big, hyperactive, need a ton of exercise and running room, I've found them to be nippy, and their prey drive is just something else entirely. xD

<br><br>I've found my Shepherd to be the exact same way :P <br>But I have heard that huskies need a <span style="font-style:italic">lot</span> of time and space to run. Not sure if it's as much as people make it out to be, but Max, my shepherd, runs around for hours, runs inside to sleep for fifteen minutes and drink, then is running around the house in hyperactive circles with his ball in his mouth waiting for someone to play with him more. >.<

  • Yea! Brian already has a small inside dog and a black lab outside. They have a large backyard and they live right on the lake so they have even more room to run along the water. He taught his black lab, Slick, to sit, shake, and stand yesterday =) He spends lots of time outside and when hes outside Slick is always right there next to him, so whatever dog we get together is gonna be at his house and will be an inside dog till it gets bigger then it will be put outside with Slick =) I told him I want another black lab as well xD After being around Slick and my bff's black lab, Tia.. i REALLY want a black lab xD

<br> Ditto. I use to take care of a pack of huskies and husky/wolf hybrids that a neighbor owned.<br> They are bigger, and heavier than you'd think by looking at pictures; powerful enough to drag an adult down the street, need HIGH amounts of exercise everyday(that was my main job), and their prey drive is VERY high. It was always a nightmare when those dogs managed to break the fence(it wasn't a weak fence either), and kill livestock. They are that powerful. Not to mention it cost hundreds of dollars every time it happened to pay for the dead animals, the fines from animal control, and repairs on the fence. Never, ever let a husky free roam, or be off leash when on a property that lacks a secure fence, because if they start chasing something, then they won't come back, and never leave a husky alone with smaller animals like small dogs, cats, chickens, etc. I'd even go as far to say never leave a husky around children unsupervised, even though the ones I took care of were fine around the owner's daughter as she grew up. In my opinion, they are more like wild animals, and wouldn't be a good choice if you plan on starting a family in the dog's lifetime, or if you think you'll be busy a lot(college, career, etc.).<br><br> I can't say much about German shepherds, since I've been around very few, and in general they don't impress me(just a personal opinion). Just make sure you do your research on them, because some can be very unstable(like the one my grandmother adopted).

  • So true Sushi! Clover, who is only 7 months and 50 some odd pounds would be able to pull me down the street if we hadn't taught her early enough. Even so, she still pulls a little bit when we get to the dog park. She was nippy, but it was corrected early. She's stubborn, extremely smart, extremely hyperactive and needs the space to run. We lucked out as well because she is part Black Lab and so we were able to correct her little "misbehavior s". She has endurance, speed and is super playful. She can run longer than most dogs and still have enough energy to wrestle around. Huskies love to dig and if you don't exercise them enough they will tear up your house because they can get very angry with you.
  • Thanks guys! Im definitely looking into getting a black lab puppy now. I've been doing research on them lately and really want one. Brian is still seto n getting a Husky even after i showed him these posts. So I'm hoping he can train the dog well enough =/
  • I LOVE Black labs or black lab mixes! They are great dogs!

  • I've wanted to get a big fluffy dog like a husky but decided against a husky because I like to have cats and I wouldn't want something happening to them (my border terrorizes them enough xD) I agree with what people said about huskies on here. They just are not a good idea if you want smaller pets or are around smaller dogs. <br><br>I've owned a german shepherd before and she was amazing. She knew the perimeter of our yard and would never leave it. We could keep her outside without a leash or fence without a problem. She never bugged people that walked by on the sidewalk or messed with other dogs. It was pretty awesome to not have to leash her or buy a fence. We could also walk her without a leash but she seemed nervous without one (would walk slow and keep looking at us). We never had a problem with aggression with her. I would pull her tail when I was little and she wouldn't do anything xD<br><br>I hope you find what you are looking whether its the lab, husky, or shepherd. <br><br>I've decided on my own breed to get eventually when I move out. Corgis~ =)

<br><br>Corgis are awesome! Lol, black labs are such well behaved dogs. Great with kids, other animals and are loyal. I love how we have that in Clover!

<br> Be stern with your opinions if you know a breed isn't right for you. I've heard way to many stories of people getting sucked into getting a specific breed just because their partner or family member liked it more, even though it wasn't a good match for them. A dog that does not fit your family will make you have to work harder to meet it's need, which can cause stress, and strain relationships. A lot of times these dogs end up at shelters too, which is just sad, since it was avoidable by doing some research and by being reasonable. In the end, owning a dog should be enjoyable, not stressful(beyond what's normal). <br><br>Have him look at that. I've found many of the breed reviews on that site to be completely true, and very accurate.<br><a href="http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/siberianhuskies.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/siberianhuskies.html</a><br>I particularly love this quote, and agree, even though I'm sure there are plenty of people that would disagree.<br>
Unless you specifically want an athletic dog for sledding, carting, backpacking, or other outdoor-related activities, preferably in a cool climate, I do not recommend this breed. Siberian Huskies were never intended to be simply pets. Trying to suppress their "hardwired" drive to work, without providing alternate outlets for their energy, can be difficult.
<br><br>Compare to the lab:<br><a href="http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/labradorretrievers.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/labradorretrievers.html</a><br><br>; Now, labs are probably my least favorite breed, but they can make <span style="text-decoration:underline">great</span> pets with the right training. My cousin's adore the breed. You just have to be very strong with the training from an early age(enroll in puppy classes if possible!), and you should come out with a wonderful pet.

  • I FINALLY talked Brian out of a Husky!! xD Now he wans a weimaraner. We had to walk two Weimaraners for his dads boss the other day then sat down at his house and researched them. We both REALLY want one and have decided this is what we will get. When my dad was younger his mom bought a mix between Timber Wolf and a English Bull Mastiff. Daddy said it was the sweetest dog he's ever met and loyal as heck. Grandma bought it to protect my aunts when they were little and grandma would be out working in the horse barns.
