Thinking about new dog~

edited July 2011 in General Discussion
Usually I dont post too often on vp but I know vp is great for advice with animals so I thought I'd post here =)

It's getting closer and closer to the time where I well eventually be moving out of the house to live on my own and I'd definitely want to have a dog with me. We currently have a border collie that barks when something is in our yard like a raccoon or other bigger animals so that makes me feel pretty safe when I'm home alone. I know if I dont hear any barking, that everything is all good and there's no one trying to break in. However, I am not planning on taking Bailey (our border collie) with me. My mom is attached to her and my little sister would probably miss her.

So I was thinking of a corgi once I move out (I've been looking at corgi mixes in the shelters as well =)). I'm not planning on moving out for awhile but I wanted to think about this thoroughly. My first pick is a cardigan welsh corgi. Yep, I know they are herders and as stated before, we have a border collie. I know about the possible nipping but there will be no little kids around the dog any time soon. I am also prepared to give the dog long walks and maybe even take it on park trails around here.

I'm wondering what other breeds may be good and if there's any certain health problems I should watch out for. Also wondering if anyone here has a corgi or had experience with one? =)

 • If you are looking for a guard dog, German Shepherds are good. My old dog would pass back and forth when someone approached our property and would bark.

Though it all depends if you will have the space or not.
 • I used to own a german shepherd. She passed from old age. She would stay in our yard without a leash or fence. It was pretty great =)

I dont think I'd have room but I do plan on getting a german shepherd again at one point in my life. They are really nice dogs

 • How about a schipperke? Small, energetic dogs, used to be used to guard barges and as pest control. They're cute, active, and intelligent.

 • Oh, and its pronounced Skip-er-kee

 • Skipper-key xD Vincent's aunts used to breed them. Fun little dogs, though he hated them. Adorable puppies.

 • I know it sounds silly xD But chihuahuas are good at alerting you when something isnt right. Mine barks when a large animal comes in the yard or when she hears a truck/car pull up in the yard. One time this kid (i didnt know him) came up and she started barking like CRAZY at the front door so i went to look and some guy was out there and i talked through the door like "what do you need?"cause i was home alone and he was like "does __(me)__ live here?" and i was like "whos asking???" turns out it was my cousins boyfriend and he needed my grandmas number xD then once this guy was just sitting on my front porch and we didnt even know him!!! turns out he was drunk and just crashed there... without heaven (my chi) i wouldnt have known anyone was out there! She also barks when my niece or nephew go outside she barks so we know if they try (came in handy when they were little and wanted to follow my brother to work or got mad and wanted to "run away" lol! xD
 • Hahah! I'm really not a fan of chihuahuas. I don't want a dog that tiny or I might as well get a bunny, cat, hamster, etc xDD I appreciate the input though! Least your dog does a good job yeah? =D xD

 • What about the Shetland Sheepdog? I'm not experienced with them but I hear they're great dogs. ;D It's funny- on the last thread I found like this I suggested the Sheltie too. XD
 • Shelties are good, my Aunt and Uncle have 2. They bark whenever a stranger comes to the door or pulls into their driveway.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but is it an apartments or a house you are moving into? I would be wary of getting a dog that barks if you are moving into an apartment as the barking could get out of hand. Example: Doors slamming, people walking up and down the hallway. You might be asked to get rid of the dog or be asked to move out entirely.
 • I actually thought of shelties when getting my border collie. I saw a litter of them and oh my goodness, soo much hair! I'll look into them though!

I'm unsure of where I will be going Kit but you brought up a really good point. Im getting a feel for my options and will definitely keep what you said in mind =) I hadn't thought about that really. ^-^

Yup, that's why I brought it up. Also, keep in mind, a small apartment might feel cramped to a high energy dog and they can become destructive. Then you will have to pay repairs on top of rent.
 • My neighbors have Corgis, a Cardigan and a Pembroke. Both are very nice dogs, I petsit them all the time. The Cardigan is a little on the crazy side and she makes a lot of noise (barking and howling) but she's also younger and a shelter dog. Overall though, I think they're a good smaller breed. The Pembroke is older and ended up needing hip surgery, but I don't know how common that is in Corgis.
