43 & Counting. (A thread about how many babies I have. xD)

edited August 2011 in General Discussion
So today, I walk into PetCo to get food for the two NEW rats that I barely got maybe two and a half months ago, and I see a lizard that I absolutely adore. This cute little guy is pawing the glass and jumping up and down in excitement whenever I go up to him. So, because I have NEVER been able to resist giving animals what they want, I tell my mother I want him, and because SHE has NEVER been able to resist giving ME what I want (I blame her for not having more control xD), I had that cute little thing in a box and on it's way home with me in ten minutes. As soon as we get home I set his tank up and look around my house, where two other tanks are set up for my rats, along with two fish bowls with beta fish in it, a tank with a turtle in it, a cage with a bird in it, two dogs beds where the dogs sleep, and a little crate where my cats like to sleep and play. Then, I look outside and see all of our horses and cattle and the chickens that I got last easter because they were adorable back then and the shelter was about to put them to sleep, (of course I couldn't allow that).

Then, before tending to/checking on/playing with all of the animals for my daily routine, I sit down and wonder how the heck I ever let myself get all of these little/big bundles of joy. 0.0

And I realized.. I'M OBSESSED.. I promised myself today - "NO MORE ANIMALS". If I see an animal in need I HAVE to help, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have to take it home and shove it into my huge animal family. xD

My list of animals:
-Two Rats (They get A LOT of attention)
-Two Pigeons (They get A LOT of attention)
-Two Beta Fish (They don't even want attention)
-One Turtle (Mr.Grumpy will bite me if I try to give him A LOT of attention)
-One Cute little lizard (Turns out he was just using me to get out of PetCo)
-One Snake (Is let out of the cage daily but doesn't like affection)
-Two Cats (Drama queens get too much attention)
-Four Horses (tons of open space to roam, very healthy, gets too much love sometimes xD)
-Nine dogs (MY BABY BABY BABIES!!! They demand and get attention and openly roam the enclosed acres)
-Six Cows/Bulls (The friendly ones like affection, the other ones try to eat my shirt)
-There must be a gazillion sheep that we own. (We shave them.. so they hate us.. and like to eat my shirts as well)
-and let's not forget my Arizona Bark Scorpions and Tarantula. (Both dangerous, both scare the crap out of me, and I'm sure both hate me like normal evil things should)

I have 43 animals, NOT counting the sheep. ALL of which are healthy, loved, and shown enough/an equal amount of affection EVERY day (by my father, mother, cousin, sister, and myself). They ALL get the oppurtunities to roam free (under supervision for most of them), and are just over all happy animals, according to me and our vet. xD So, as long as we keep up the good work and live on our giant piece of land, I don't see anything wrong with the number of animals we have now, I just don't think getting any more would be a good idea.

Of course, when the Scorpions and Tarantulas roam free we don't really find all of them that same day. O.O Is that a joke?? Maybe....

How many animals do you have?? : ) (looking for someone to make me feel like I'm not alone in this addiction thing). lol.
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD

  • The most we've had at my parent's house at any one time:

Two guinea pigs (Axel, Roxas)
One ferret (Deja Vu Du) (Free Roam)
Three chickens (Teriyaki, Kytaro, Aranel) (Free Roam)
Two cats (Ninja, Gabby) (Free Roam)
One dog (Brook Lynn) (Free Roam)
One cockatiel (Luna)
One pigeon (Walter)
Two lizards (Stubby, Stomp)
One snake (Blaze)
One tarantula (Rose)
One fish (Lazarus)

Mind you, this is in the middle of a large suburban city, in a small three bedroom house with a decent sized back yard. xD All the free roam animals went where they pleased, inside or out. Yes, including the ferret. Yes, she always came home.

  • Just asking for a goldfish gets me the answer,"Absolutely not." >.>
Most animals I've ever owned at once:

two mice
one dog
two fish

5 pets. My mom is strict. Those took a lot of begging.. XD
  • You have pigeons? :OO That is so cool. Do they have names? XD
It seems like it'd be a lot of fun with all those animals! The only thing I'm allowed to have is a dog. My mom doesn't really like cats (DX) and small animals (guinea pigs, fish) we don't own. XD I'd love to own a horse, but that won't happen for awhile because we don't meet the requirements. XD

Anyway, I'm glad those animals have a nice home.
  • Daaaaang Zyn! (Welcome back by the way ^_^) That's a LOT of animals!
I'm trying to think of the most I had at one time. Hmm...

7 Guinea pigs
2 Dogs
5 Rats
10 Fish
13 Hamsters
9 Gerbils
1 Turtle
1 Crab
1 Cat

  • Hey Zyn =) I like the description for the lizard XD
Basically, the obsession is known as hoarding but I think your instance is different than the horror stories on tv -since you have the room, money, and health to care for them all.

Most I've owned all at one time were 3 guinea pigs, 7 gerbils, and 2 cats. But have owned 2 snakes (Garter that I caught), 3 hamsters, several fish, crickets (that I caught and escaped by eating through my mesh bug catcher..), 2 Bullfrog tadpoles (that Almost made it to froghood but not quite -_- ..99 cent pond accessories) and hopefully getting more if I have the same science teacher 2 years ago when I had Biology, oh and seamonkeys once upon a time (which are actually microscopic shrimp for those of you who didn't know already), salamanders that I caught in the semi swampy woods down the street, hmm..number of other bugs I've caught back when I had a thing for doing so. Also had a pair of crabs from the beach where my friend lived that we went to go visit and feed as often as we could (kept em in bucket hidden in our secret hide out spot we were building) Oh. And dust bunnies ;D Got plenty of those around this house, haha. I think that's it for everything I've ever owned. I have just Daisy kitten now though <3

  • Lol, well if I could, I would have a TON of horses, cattle, etc. And plus some small animals, but right now I personally own only 1 animal. Which is my dog. I used to have like 15 dogs cause my dog had puppies then we moved into a small town so we couldn't have that many any more. :x But I am probably getting a horse soon, gotta find the right one, then I am 98% sure Im getting a Charolai calf and breeding it when its older and showing it, then I show my friends horse, sometimes I am gonna show more then one, and if you count all the horses I ride, which I call my own, cause most of them I am basically the only person who rides them (especially Babydoll) then there are 5 horses or so, Theres Babydoll,C'more,Dorse,Simon, and then last but not least, Chevey, who I dont ride as much but me and his owner are going to show together. Then I am gonna soon probably ride another friends 2-3 horses for her soon then ANOTHER friends 2 horses and I may help train another one of hers. XD So mostly their all horses that I call mine, then I actually have one dog, then my family has 2 more dogs and 1 cat. I am probably getting a Beta Fish soon too. ;P Then theres a bull I call mine but I havent seen him in awhile cause he was moved for the summer. Lol, sorry for the rambling. XD

  • Well, as long as none of them are munae i see no problem with it....
the most i have had was
2 mice
4 dogs
some lizzard things
a tank of frogs
a cat
and i think thats it for the most a one time right now we have
1 cat (hates people XD because he is a barn cat)
5 dogs (spoiled as hell O.o)
2 guinea pigs (they also hate people and bite)
and my sister wants a kitten...

  • Right now?

Three dogs (Emily, Kaiser, Bayleigh)
Four cats (Destiny, Angel, Oden, Possum)

That's it.

At one time, I have around 30 betta fish. I honestly believe that I was a fish hoarder. lol I had countless chickens and ducks until some pesky fox got into their pen. I gave the remaining birds to my aunt who still has them and I still call them mine. :) One chicken (Ophelia) and three ducks (Pepsi, Sprite, Dr. Pepper).
how did that work? seperate tanks for each beta? lol

  • Actually they do make dividers. You could have several fish in one tank depending on its size
Well I knew there was a split tank but not for that many o.O lol

  • Lol, I meant for tank usage in general not necessarily beta. But just saying you could technically have a large aquarium tank with dividers therefore not needing 30 separate tanks per beta

  • The most I've had was:

3 dogs
2 cats
5 rabbits
3 rats
7 fish
1 hamster

The hamster died not to long ago (RIP April) and one rabbit got a new home (allergy reasons). The three rats need to be rehomed (allergy reasons) and one bunny also needs to be rehomed (allergy reasons).
  •
how did that work? seperate tanks for each beta? lol

Some did have their own tank. A betta needs at least 2.5 gallons for each fish. I had the females all in one sorority tank. They got along fine, with minimal scuffles. The more girls you have in one tank, the less fighting that goes on.

Most of the boys were in divided 10 gallons. Then I had several other smaller tanks.
  • He really was just using me to get out of PetCo though, whenever I go near him now he runs into his log thingy and peeks out at me with his two evil little eyes. I had thirteen hamsters before, so that would technically make 56 animals at once. I also had this Beta fish that literally lived for four years, he was the son of my other beta fish so I had him from the very first day he was born and knew when his birthday was. He died a few days after his birthday on his fourth year, isn't that rare?? hmm..
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Oh and the Pigeon's names are Skreech and Mellow by the way... you could probably judge their personalities by their names alone. xD I let them out every day and they come back home every night after doing god knows what.. they're trained to stay away from other animals and people, and to avoid any type of food that isn't their brand I feed them at home.. it's actually incredible how smart pigeons are.

Not so rare. The average lifespan for a well taken care of betta is around 3.5-4 years. Good job keeping him for so long!
  • We had 13 cats and one dog at one point (all but 3 were outdoor cats), but after we called the cops on our neighbors for leaving their rather mean dog off leash all the time (It tried to kill our cats all the time, actually chased one into the road and it got hit. It was a King shepherd, so pretty big, and it went after my bf a few times too) they started disappearing one by one, friendliest cats first... turns out they were catching them and taking them to the shelter to get revenge.

At this point we have 3 cats, and one Ball Python. We had to get rid of the dog we'd had for 8 years because we had to move, and our apartment doesn't allow dogs. We're in the process of buying a house though, so when we move we're getting an Irish Wolfhound, and a few more snakes. XD

  • My neighbour taught them everything, yes, technically they're called homing pigeons but I figured I'd explain it before someone asked. For some reason I thought Beta fish only lived for a year. xD If I had known I would have been in for that long of a run I dont think I would have gotten a beta fish, I was only 12.
