Of course, I'm on vacation and the mare at my barn decides to have her baby! She is a thoroughbred. She had a colt by the Friesian stallion Hertog Jan v.d. Paddensteeg. He is healthy and happy. Trinity is a great mom who is attentive without being overprotective. Thy have named him The Good Samaritan, and will call him "Sammy". I'm not home at the moment so I will post pictures AS SOON as I get home! My dad sent me pictures but I don have access to a computer, only my phone. He is absolutey adorable and looks just like his mommy!

Just a little update on Sammy... I get home on Thursday so I will have pictures then. They have put Sammy and his mom in one of the paddocks next to one of our boarder's mares, Romeo, and Cowboy. My dad says Ro and Cowboy are especially curious about little Sammy and that he thinks they've never seen a foal before. Sammy and Romeo played and chased eachother from opposite sides of the fence and are having a wonderful time. I'm so excited to get home and see the baby and of course Ro, Knip, and Georgia!

He's probably going to be a dark bay since his father was a Fresian. I love little bays too ^.^

What a cute baby! Out of curiousity, why did they breed that mix? I've been out of the horse world for a long time so I am kind of compairing them to dogs I guess. Wouldn't you want a pure Friesian or a pure TB and not a mix of the two?

A lot of draft/tb crosses are thought well of in the english world. Its a way to get the movement of a warmblood out of a breeding that isnt quite so expensive. Its considered either a Friesian Sporthorse or sometimes they can be registered as American Warmbloods but a lot of bigger warmblood registries tell me its kind of a joke trying to breed these horses and match warmbloods because they are just mix breed horses and your not guaranteed a well moving slender horse. Your just as likely to get a chunky horse with no movement. In general its hard to find drafts and thoroughbreds thats conformation compliment each other due to the extreme differences in their conformation overall. I believe the friesian studbook will kick out any stallion that breeds to anything besides a friesian and they can lose their breeding status so most people stay clear of this particular breeding match. No offense meant at all by any of that coaster!! Id love to get a friesian cross myself!

Essentially, it boils down to what Vampy said. The people who own the mother and are bringing up the foal weren't looking to match any high-end warmbloods in movement or anything. They bred with a Fresian for an added toughness and diversity. They are not high profile show people and have done it more for the experience of raising up a nice show horse. The people who own both mother and baby are very responsible and have bred TB/drafts before. They chose the stud carefully in the hopes that all the chips would fall into place

None taken

I don't own the foal or mare and like I told zagari, they weren't trying to breed some top notch show horse. They chose carefully and essentially bred that cross for a tough horse that could be diverse in many disciplines.

Haha yep! That's the TB side of him. He was having a blast running around today. He's started to annoy his mom and Grace (the palomino mare that is turned out with them). He's quite the little trouble maker lol I'm uploading a few videos right now! They might take a while to process though >.<

Yeah he's been doing that quick a bit and when Grace ignores him or pushes him away he acts all confused then looks up, sees his mom, and walks over like 'oh! no one saw that, right?' it's adorable

Today we worked with Sammy on his feet (which he finds close to torture and tries to lay down on my lol) and we also worked with him on being sprayed with a spray bottle. He was perfectly fine with it...his mom on the other hand was NOT having and and flipped out a little bit but she's generally afraid of anything that moves.
