Your pump also draws air, that's what the pipe is for, to hang over the outside of the tank and draw air. The wool filter catches the larger waste and the carbon "purifies" the water. Now, as for how this is supposed to work, I'm not really sure. There's no way in that tank to "force" the water to circulate. Will need to do more research if I can find the tank anywhere else LOL

Great looking set up! Sadly I'm no help as I've never dealt with the type of filter you're using. I've had so many tanks (currently 4 up and running) and have been keeping tanks for 15+ years and use power filters and have a friend who uses the canister filters. One of my filters layer with 3 mediums, a thick foam sponge, carbon, gravel. I would think the wool acts like the foam to catch large debris as Alabama stated and the carbon is for purification. I would think the carbon would sit atop the wool as it does in one of my filters.

Sorry that's not much help lol but good luck. Also what type of bettas will you have? I've got two half moons in a divided tank.
Okay we did a test run with the pump and the tube and found that the pump pulls water from the bottom of the solid bit and pushes it out the nozzle which the hose can be attached to.

AND THEN!
Dad, being the best person ever, spent some time looking things up and managed to find practically the same tank with the set up we are after.

THE VERY HELPFUL PICTURE

The water flows from left to right in this shot.
So it goes: wool -> carbon (or whatever that is) -> gravel.
And that black square under the heater is the water pump. If you flick to the next photo in that persons album you can see that the hose hooks over into one of the fish compartments.

So we have the water circulation bit down packed
Still confused about the filter mediums though cause we don't have that gravel stuff?

These were the two I had in the simple twin tank but the one on the left died about a month ago
The one on the right, named Finnegan :P, was labelled as a 'Delta Halfmoon' in the shop but I'm not sure that's entirely correct... He cost me like 4 times more than the normal crowntails and veil-tails though
Finnegans colours have changed a lot in his tail since I got him, much to my dismay I just took this photo of him. There's about 9months between both photos.

As for what I'm going to get... no idea!
I might get some female bettas for my other tank and see what other fish I can put with them, not sure yet.

Thanks for the help guys, hopefully I can figure this out soon so Finnegan can get back into warm water and cheer up!
You should be able to pick up the gravel at any petstore. That looks like a lot of medium for the pump to pull water through. Before you put fish in, I'd be sure it's actually moving water. Glad you got it figured out.
