it all depends on stats and breeds. some mutts are better then others.
a Border Collie/ Aussie is gonna be better for herding than a German Shepherd/ Bulldog, but the GS/BD will be better for Schz and Dock Jumping. It all depends on what you are trying to do with the mutt
For the most part, mutts aren't used like purebreds are in game. I think that's partly because they come neutered, so there's not much to do with them, except event. When I used to breed for the public a lot, the only time anyone really asked me to breed mutts was for eventing purposes. Someone might take, say, a high endurance Border Collie and breed it to a high speed Greyhound in hopes of getting a mutt with decent speed and decent endurance. That dog might be good for eventing. However, most of the mutts you'll find for sale in the puppy plaza don't have much going for them.
Like Frost said, since mutts are born sterile they can only really be used for eventing (unless you collect mutts or dye them). Even then, many people like to breed their successful eventers and so they stick with purebreds. As for whether they are useful, I'd say yes but only those very few dogs that were crossbred intentionally. I have bred a number of mutts specifically for certain events and they've been successful. I will say though that there is a constant "overflow" of mutts on VP, and the vast majority of them really would not be useful even in events.
