The "tricks" aren't from the program, things like lighting and shadow can be done with anything. Look up "Mona Lisa in MS Paint" on youtube, it's pretty awesome. The person also does some paintings with barbecue sauce and other things xD.

Reference will help a lot. As I've been saying for a while now, if you're not sure what something is supposed to look like, don't guess! Use a reference. Look at pictures of nothing but deer for a while, then try to draw one xD.
