well same concept then :) dodge/burn still works when you get better with shading, then start working with actual colors to shade not dodge and burn :)

if your just starting... try the dodge/burn tool (you use gimp i assume) dodge makes things lighter, burn makes things darker set opacity(or maybe strength in gimp?) to like 20-50 use burn where darker areas would be(where sun doesnt hit) and dodge …
