I would be against any barbs. And if you're going to do a betta, just do the single fish with some shrimp. A five gallon is kind of small. In general, the rule is 1 gallon per 1 inch of fish.

A properly cared for betta can live on average 4 years. Sometimes they live longer. I currently have 18 bettas.

Aquabid is your best friend. If you're going to keep a betta with your ghost shrimp, look out. I know many bettas that will eat the shrimp. Some do get along fine with them though.
